Dryer Vent Cleaning in Olathe, KS
Dryer vent cleaning removes lint from the full length of the vent, from the back of the dryer to the outside hood, so the dryer runs cooler and dries in one cycle. How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
At least once a year for most homes, and more often with a long vent run, a large household or pets. The U.S. Fire Administration advises having the dryer and its venting system cleaned periodically by qualified service personnel, especially when clothes are taking longer than normal to dry.
Why is a clogged dryer vent dangerous?
Because lint burns and a clogged vent traps heat next to it. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates that 2,900 clothes dryer fires in homes are reported each year, causing an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries and $35 million in property loss. Failure to clean was the leading factor, in 34 percent of those fires. On a gas dryer, a blocked vent can also push carbon monoxide back into the house.
What are the signs of a clogged dryer vent?
The clearest sign is a load that needs more than one cycle to dry. Others are:
- The dryer cabinet or the laundry room gets noticeably hot.
- A burning or musty smell while the dryer runs.
- The flap on the outside hood barely opens, or lint has collected around it.
- Lint builds up behind the dryer or around the door seal.
- The laundry room feels humid after a cycle.
What does dryer vent cleaning include?
A proper cleaning covers the whole vent run, not just the lint trap. The usual steps are:
- Disconnect the dryer and clean the lint trap housing and the connection at the back.
- Brush and blow out the vent duct along its full length to the outside.
- Clean the outside hood and make sure its flap opens and closes freely.
- Check the transition duct behind the dryer for kinks, crushing or damage.
- Reconnect the dryer and confirm strong airflow at the outside hood.
Can I clean a dryer vent myself?
Partly. You can and should clean the lint trap after every load, and vacuum the trap housing and the first few feet of duct behind the dryer. A vent that runs through a wall, floor or roof is longer than a household brush reaches, and lint packs into the elbows, which is where rotary tools are needed.
Does it matter if the dryer vents through the roof?
Yes. Roof terminations clog faster than wall hoods, because lint has to travel upward and collects at the roof cap, and the blockage cannot be seen from the ground. A roof-vented dryer usually needs cleaning more often.
What does dryer vent cleaning cost in Olathe?
The price depends on the length of the vent run, where it ends (wall or roof), and whether there are nests or damaged duct to deal with. A short, straight run to an outside wall is the simplest job.

How long does dryer vent cleaning take?
A straightforward vent run to an outside wall is typically cleaned in under an hour. Long runs, roof terminations, bird nests and crushed or disconnected duct take longer, because they need extra access or repair.
Should I put a screen over the outside dryer vent?
No. Wire screen or cloth over the outlet collects lint and blocks the vent, which is the problem cleaning is meant to solve. Use a proper vent hood with a flap that opens when the dryer runs and closes when it stops.
Is foil or plastic flexible duct safe behind a dryer?
It is the weakest part of most dryer vents. Thin foil and plastic accordion duct crushes easily, traps lint in its ridges and can burn. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, kept as short and straight as possible, is the safer connection.
Will cleaning the vent make my dryer work better?
Usually, yes. A clear vent lets moist air leave the drum, so loads dry in one cycle and the dryer runs for less time. If drying is still slow after the vent is cleaned, the dryer itself needs service.
Does a new house need its dryer vent cleaned?
It can. Construction debris, a crushed transition duct or a long run with several elbows can restrict a vent from the first day. If a nearly new dryer is slow to dry, have the vent checked before blaming the appliance.
Can a dryer vent be cleaned in the same visit as a chimney sweep?
Yes. Absolute Chimney Sweepers does both, so ask for the dryer vent to be added when you book a chimney sweep or inspection. We work in Olathe and 20 surrounding towns, 7 am to 9 pm, seven days a week.
