What does gas fireplace service include?

A full service covers everything that burns, lights or vents:

  1. The burner and pilot assembly are cleaned of dust, spider webs and corrosion.
  2. The logs and embers are set exactly as the manufacturer’s diagram shows.
  3. The glass is removed, cleaned and refitted, and its gasket is checked.
  4. The ignition system, thermocouple or thermopile, and any remote or wall switch are tested.
  5. The vent and its outside termination are checked for blockage, corrosion and nests.
  6. The blower, if fitted, is cleaned.
  7. Gas connections are checked for leaks, and the unit is run and watched.

What kinds of gas fireplaces are there?

TypeHow it ventsWhat to know
Direct-ventSealed glass front; a double-walled pipe brings in outside air and takes out exhaustThe most common type in homes built since the 1990s. Never run with the glass off.
Natural-vent (B-vent)Open front; vents up a metal flue using room airNeeds a clear flue and enough air in the room.
Vented gas logsSet in a masonry fireplace; vents up the original chimneyThe damper must stay open. The chimney still needs a yearly inspection.
Vent-freeNo vent; exhaust enters the roomSubject to run-time and room-size limits set by the maker. Ask when booking.

Why is my gas fireplace sooting?

Soot means the gas is not burning completely. The usual causes are logs placed where the flame hits them, a dirty burner, a closed or clogged air shutter, or the wrong gas pressure. Yellow, lazy flames that lean on the logs are the sign. Soot is more than a cleaning problem: incomplete combustion also produces carbon monoxide, so a sooting fireplace should be serviced before it is used again.

Why won’t my gas fireplace light?

Most no-light calls come down to a handful of causes: the pilot is out, the thermocouple or thermopile has weakened with age, the remote or receiver batteries are dead, a wall switch or its wiring has failed, or the gas supply valve is off. Some of these you can check yourself; a weak thermopile or a fault in the valve needs a technician.

How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?

Once a year. Manufacturers call for yearly service, and NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys and vents, calls for vents to be inspected at least once a year. Service before the heating season means the fireplace is ready on the first cold evening.

What does gas fireplace service cost in Olathe?

The price depends on the type of fireplace, whether a chimney inspection is included for a gas log set, and whether any parts are needed.

Questions

Gas fireplace FAQ

Is it normal for a gas fireplace to smell?

A new fireplace smells for the first few fires as the paint and oils cure, and most fireplaces give off a dusty smell on the first fire of each season. A smell of gas is different: leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 before anything else.

Why does my gas fireplace pilot light keep going out?

The usual causes are a thermocouple or thermopile that has weakened with age or is coated in dust, a pilot flame that has become too small, a draft in the vent blowing across the pilot, or low gas pressure. Cleaning the pilot assembly fixes some of these; a worn thermocouple is replaced.

Can I run a gas fireplace during a power outage?

It depends on the ignition. A fireplace with a standing pilot and a millivolt valve works without electricity. One with electronic ignition needs the battery backup in its control box, if it has one. In either case the blower will not run, so the fireplace gives less heat than usual.

How do I clean the glass on a gas fireplace?

Wait until the glass is cold, then remove it as the manual describes and clean it with a cleaner made for gas fireplace glass. Household glass cleaners containing ammonia and anything abrasive will etch or scratch it. The white haze that builds up is a mineral deposit from combustion, not dirt.

Is a vent-free gas fireplace safe to use?

It is designed to burn cleanly enough to vent into the room, and it has an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts it off if oxygen falls. Even so, all of its moisture and combustion products go into the house, so manufacturers set limits on run time and room size. Follow them, keep a carbon monoxide alarm nearby, and never use one as the only heat source.

Do the logs really have to be placed exactly as the manual shows?

Yes. The log layout is designed so the flames pass between the logs rather than hitting them. A log moved an inch can sit in the flame, soot heavily and raise carbon monoxide output. Logs are put back in the diagrammed position as part of every service.
