What kinds of chimneys do Merriam homes have?
Mostly masonry chimneys from the 1950s through the 1970s. The 1960s are Merriam’s biggest decade, with about 25 percent of its homes, followed by the 1970s with 19 percent and the 1980s with 16 percent. About 69 percent of homes were built before 1980, and the median year built is 1970.
| When the home was built | Share of Merriam homes |
|---|---|
| Before 1950 | About 13% |
| 1950s | About 12% |
| 1960s | About 25% |
| 1970s | About 19% |

About 60 percent of the city’s roughly 5,500 housing units are detached single-family houses.
What should Merriam homeowners watch for?
- Wood stoves and fireplace inserts added in the 1970s and 1980s: many were slid into an existing fireplace without a liner of their own. That arrangement builds creosote quickly and hides it behind the insert.
- 1960s and 1970s masonry: flue tiles, crowns and mortar joints are 50 to 60 years old and due for a careful inspection.
- Smoky fireplaces: houses that have had new windows and added insulation are tighter than when they were built, and a fireplace may no longer get the air it needs to draw.

Does a wood-burning fireplace insert need its own chimney liner?
Yes. An insert should be connected to a stainless steel liner sized for it and running the full height of the chimney. Older inserts that simply vent into the big fireplace flue cool the smoke too fast, which builds creosote quickly, and the insert has to be pulled out before the flue can be swept or inspected.
Why does my fireplace smoke when the furnace or a kitchen fan is running?
Because they are competing for the same air. A furnace, clothes dryer, bath fan or range hood pulls air out of the house, and in a tight house the easiest way for replacement air to get in is down the chimney. Opening a nearby window slightly while the fire burns is a quick test of whether this is the cause.
