Almost entirely brick masonry chimneys from the 1940s and 1950s. What should Roeland Park homeowners watch for?
- Furnace flues: in a house of this age the furnace and water heater usually vent into the brick chimney, often through a flue next to the fireplace flue. Both need inspecting.
- Clean-out doors: the small metal door at the base of the chimney fills with soot and debris and should close tightly.
- 75-year-old liners and crowns: clay tiles crack and crowns break up with age, and the damage is rarely visible from the ground.

What is the small metal door at the bottom of my chimney?
It is a clean-out door. Soot, flakes of flue tile and debris fall to the base of the flue, and the door lets them be removed. It should close tightly, because an open or missing clean-out door weakens the draft and can let flue gases into the basement.
Is it worth restoring the fireplace in a 1940s house?
Often it is, but have it inspected before deciding. Many fireplaces of that age can be brought back with a new liner and damper. If the firebox or flue is too damaged for wood fires, a gas insert with its own liner is a common alternative that keeps the fireplace in use.
