Smoke coming back into the room, or soot falling into the firebox? Stop using the fireplace and call (913) 210-6606. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 first.

What kinds of chimneys do Edgerton homes have?

Two kinds dominate: 1970s fireplaces and old brick chimneys from the original town. The 1970s are Edgerton’s biggest decade by far, with about a third of its roughly 700 housing units, and about 17 percent of homes were built before 1940. Another 23 percent have been built since 2000. The median year built is 1976, and about 89 percent of homes are detached single-family houses.

Because the community is small, the Census estimates behind these figures carry more uncertainty than for a large city; treat them as approximate.

What should Edgerton homeowners watch for?

  • 1970s fireplaces: many are metal heat-circulating fireboxes set into masonry, and the metal rusts and warps after 50 years.
  • Pre-1940 chimneys: old brick chimneys may be unlined and should be inspected before they are used.
  • Newer homes: gas fireplace vents and dryer vents need a yearly check.

Questions

Questions from Edgerton homeowners

What is a heat-circulating fireplace?

It is a steel firebox with hollow walls, built into a masonry fireplace, that draws room air through the walls, warms it and returns it through vents above the opening. They were popular in the 1970s. After decades of fires the steel rusts, warps and cracks, and because many models are no longer made, a damaged one often has to be rebuilt or replaced with an insert.

Can I burn scrap lumber or treated wood in my fireplace?

No. Pressure-treated lumber, painted or stained wood, plywood and particleboard release toxic fumes when burned, and the residue damages the flue. Burn only dry, untreated firewood. Cardboard and wrapping paper are also a poor idea, because they flare up and send burning fragments up the chimney.
