What kinds of chimneys do Mission Hills homes have?
Large brick and stone masonry chimneys, many of them historic. About 24 percent of Mission Hills homes were built before 1940 and about 74 percent before 1960; the 1950s alone account for 35 percent. The median year built is 1953, and all of the city’s roughly 1,280 housing units are detached single-family houses. Houses of this size and age commonly have more than one fireplace.
| When the home was built | Share of Mission Hills homes |

| 1940s | About 15% |
| 1950s | About 35% |
| 1960s and 1970s | About 16% |
| 1980 or later | About 9% |
Because the community is small, the Census estimates behind these figures carry more uncertainty than for a large city; treat them as approximate.
What should Mission Hills homeowners watch for?
- Soft old brick: brick made before the 1930s is softer than modern brick and is damaged by hard modern mortar, so repairs need matching materials.
- Multiple flues in one chimney: a chimney serving two or three fireplaces has that many flues, each needing its own inspection.
- Tall, shallow fireboxes: older fireplace designs smoke more easily than modern ones.

How is a chimney on a historic home repaired without changing its look?
By matching the materials. Old brick is softer than modern brick, so joints are repointed with a softer lime-based mortar matched in color and finish; hard Portland cement mortar cracks the brick faces. Flue problems are fixed from inside, by relining, so the outside of the chimney is left as it was.
Why does an old fireplace with a tall, shallow firebox smoke?
Because its opening is large compared with its flue. Many older fireplaces were built with tall openings, and when the fire is small or the flue is cool, smoke spills over the top of the opening into the room. A smoke guard across the top of the opening, a hotter fire, or warming the flue before lighting usually solves it; a persistent problem calls for an inspection.
