What kinds of chimneys do Mission homes have?
Mission’s houses mostly have brick masonry chimneys, because the 1950s were its biggest decade, with about 28 percent of the city’s housing. Building continued steadily through the 1980s, and the median year built is 1972. Mission is also unusual for the area in how much of it is not houses: only about 46 percent of its roughly 5,700 housing units are detached single-family homes.

What should Mission residents watch for?
- 1950s houses: a chimney of that age needs its flue tiles, crown and mortar joints checked, and many were built without a cap.
- Apartments, condos and townhomes: dryer vents in multi-unit buildings run longer and are easy to overlook. Slow drying or a hot laundry closet is the sign to report.
- Uncapped chimneys: open flues attract birds and animals, which block the flue and bring in nesting material.

What should I do about birds nesting in my chimney?
If they are chimney swifts, wait. Chimney swifts are protected by federal law, and an active nest cannot be removed. The birds leave on their own in the fall. After they have gone, have the flue swept to clear the nest and fit a cap so they cannot return the next spring.
Does a 1950s chimney need a cap?
Yes. Many chimneys of that period were built without one. A cap keeps rain out of the flue, which protects the liner and the damper, and its mesh sides keep out birds, squirrels and raccoons. It is one of the least expensive ways to prevent chimney damage.
